Protect your smile with Cleanings & Dental Examinations—essential preventive care paired with customized treatment planning for lasting dental health.
Not all cleanings are the same. The right type depends on your gum health, how long it has been since your last visit, and what Dr. Church finds during your exam.
Regular prophylaxis cleaning — the standard twice-yearly cleaning for patients with healthy gums. Your hygienist removes plaque and tartar from tooth surfaces and along the gum line, then polishes your teeth. Most patients qualify for this type.
Gingivitis cleaning — recommended when early signs of gum disease are present, such as bleeding or inflamed gums. This cleaning goes slightly deeper than a regular cleaning and may take a bit longer to address the early-stage buildup causing the inflammation.
Deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) — used when periodontal disease is diagnosed. This is a therapeutic procedure that cleans below the gum line, removing bacteria and tartar from root surfaces in pockets that have formed between the teeth and gums. Dr. Church will only recommend this when there is clinical evidence it is needed — such as significant bone loss or gum pockets deeper than normal.
If you are unsure what type of cleaning you need, Dr. Church will evaluate your gum health at your exam and walk you through the recommendation before anything begins. Gum disease treatment is available in-office for patients who need more than a standard cleaning.
Your home care routine works hand-in-hand with professional cleanings and examinations to keep your smile healthy. Brush twice daily for two minutes using a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste, paying attention to all tooth surfaces and along the gum line. Clean between your teeth every day using floss or interdental brushes to remove plaque and food particles from areas your toothbrush can’t reach.
Watch for signs that you might need to schedule an appointment before your next routine visit, such as persistent tooth pain, bleeding gums, increased sensitivity to hot or cold, or visible changes in your teeth or gums. Contact Church Family Dentistry & Cosmetics promptly if you notice any of these symptoms, as early intervention prevents problems from worsening. Dr. Church can also recommend specific products or techniques tailored to your individual oral health needs during your regular examinations.
